The Hampton International Games is one of the Premier events on the Caribbean Athletic calendar. It is sanctioned by and forms part of the National Athletic Association of Trinidad & Tobago and the International Amateur Athletics Federations Annual Athletics calendar.
The Hampton Athletic Club is a nonprofit organization. Every year for the past 52 years (1955-present) the club has been encouraging young individuals to become involved in athletics. This is an opportunity that develops self-esteem, and avoids the road to crime. Generally, to the hardworking and talented ones, it becomes the gateway to securing athletic scholarships and consequently, a better way of life.
Notably, every year the club hosts a premier athletic event, "THE HAMPTON INTERNATIONAL GAMES". This event attracts world class athletes from around the globe. Nevertheless, because of the limited resources of the club, it is a painstaking exercise to fund these games each year. Consequently, several top International Athletes have been denied participation because of insufficient funds.
The Hampton International Games seek to extend the process of having Trinidad & Tobago identified as the region's center for international athletic competition. Further, it is envisioned that the games would become a standard feature on the tourist calendars of international tour operators, thereby enhancing Trinidad & Tobago's image as a tourist destination. In addition to the international prestige and the tourism revenue which can be derived, the direct effect is to raise the level of enthusiasm and participation in athletics at the national level while challenging local talent to measure up to an international standard.
The presence of the world's finest athletes in competition on local soil would inspire many youths to seek greatness for themselves and by its very nature, steer them on a path to achievement and an extension of their own horizons.
